Thousands species of microalgae are spread over the earth's surface and are at the basis of the marine food chain contributing to the majority of the carbon fixation and oxygen production at the globe level (Falkowski 2002). They grow in almost any salinity conditions from North Pole to equator and resist to dessication and a wide range of luminosity, pH and temperature. These general characteristics make them ideal candidates for diverse applications in biotechnology, cosmetics and pharmacology. However, one of their immediate and indispensable use is as food in the rearing of shellfishes, shrimps and some fishes. Today, if the alimentary value of several limited strains is assessed, identity mistakes occur regularly (Robert et Trintignac 1997). Indeed, to date, investigations concerning microalgae identification are mainly based on morphological features, but the size range of this unicellular plankton (few microns) makes difficult to do some attempts of recognition unless an expensive and time consuming Electronic Microscope analysis step is used.
