A REVIEW ON SPERM MOTILITY CHARACTERISTICS IN FRESHWATER FISH

Spermatozoa of freshwater fishes are immotile in seminal plasma due to high concentration of K~+ or osmolality. A hypo-osmotic shock is necessary to trigger the initiation of sperm motility. There are several factors affecting percentage of motile spermatozoa, sperm velocity and flagellar behavior through changing of flagellar wave patterns such as osmolality and pH of activation medium as well ions (Na~+, K~+, Ca~(2+)) (Alavi and Cosson, 2005, 2006; Alavi et al, 2008a; Cosson, 2008). In this review,we are summarizing and comparing the sperm motility characteristics among sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus], common barbel (Barbus barbus), perch (Percafluviatilis), pike (Esox Indus) and tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron).
