Elementary, well-known and common-sense, considerations about the importance of simple, robust, practical tools for ship design, notably for concept and preliminary design, are gathered. Ongoing work - on simple analytical relations for ship bow waves, and practical Green-function methods for flow about a ship hull steadily advancing in calm water - related to the development of simple practical tools intended for applications to hydrodynamic design is also briefly reviewed.
