Normal cellular metabolism in an oxygen-rich atmosphere is accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These partially reduced forms of molecular oxygen are, in general, highly reactive molecules that play a role in normal cell signaling, but can also cause irreversible oxidative modification of macromolecules that adversely affects cell phenotype (i.e., causes oxidant stress). To limit these untoward effects of ROS, their flux is tightly regulated by low-molecular-weight antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes.
