Summary: Our results indicated that curcumin in associated with its anti-oxidant and anti-vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) potentials could prevent diabetes induced oxidative stress caused microvascular dysfunction in eyes. Importantly, by using either curcumin eye ointment or oral curcumin administration, there was no significant difference on anti-VEGF findings.Introduction: Hyperglycemia in diabetes can promote reactive oxygen species (ROS) over production or called oxidative stress which will cause endothelial cells to become dysfunction. This ROS-induced endothelium dysfunction in diabetes acts specifically as an underling cause of diabetic complications including diabetic reti-nopathy and diabetic iridopathy [1-8]. Many investigators have tried to identify the potential dietary antioxidants that may be of value to reduce and prevent diabetes-induced endothelial dysfunction. From our previous studies [9-10], we found that curcumin could protect endothelial dysfunction closely related to the decreased ROS (indicated by liver MDA level) in diabetic rat iris. However, the findings indicated that each diabetic rat is needed curcumin daily supplementation as much as 300mg/ kg. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the antioxidant effect of curcumin on prevention of microvascular alterations on iris by topical application of curcumin eye ointment.
