Mechanism of Antibacterial Activity by Copper Oxides

@@ Pathogenic bacteria can emerge senousnosocomial lnfectiomn healthcare places and causesignificant morbidityand mortality.To reduce the risk of infection from the pathogens in such environment, materials with antibacterial activity are highly required. From this viewpoint, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is good material because it has antibacterial activity under UV irradiation via photocatalytic effects [1]. However, application of TiO2 for indoor environment such as hospitals is a difficult task because it needs strong UV light.To address this problem, we have developed copper-deposited photocatalystsbecause copper has been known as efficient antibacterial agents [2]. Recently, we found that copper (I) compounds such as copper (I) oxide (Cu2O)have highly efficient antibacterial and antiviral activities. In this study, the effects on bacteria by Cu2O were investigated.
