Length distributions of Sardinella aurita provide a first indication of the age composition of the catch of that species and thereby of the total mortality on the stock. During the period 1982-1995, catches of S. aurita by the industrial fishery in Mauritania and Morocco were relatively low. This situation changed in 1996 with the start of a directed fishery for sardinella by trawlers from the European Union (EU) in Mauritania. Catches in Mauritania rose from an average of 96 000 tonnes in 1982-1995to 192 000 tonnes in 1996-2005. The impact of the fishery could be seen from the change in length distribution of the catches in the subsequent years. In the first years after the start of the directed fishery, the fish in the catch had a unimodal lengthdistribution around 35 cm. This size group presumably represent fish of three years and older. With the increase in fishing effort after 1996, the modal length after some years dropped to 32 cm. This probably indicated that the bulk of the catch now consisted of two year-old fish. The decrease in average size and age of the fish in the population was probably an effect of the increased catches in the period after 1995. It is concluded that the existence of a 15 mile fishing limit for pelagic trawlers in Mauritania is an important safeguard against overexploitation of Sardinella aurita. This protected zone provides a refuge of the fish for the large pelagic trawlers at the time of the year when the fish have a more coastal distribution.
