In 2011 the RFCS project “Investigation of measures for extension of BF tuyere life time (ExTuL)” was started withthe aim to reduce the unplanned BF stoppages due to tuyere damages. In the context of the project advanced BFtuyere monitoring systems were developed in order to identify “bottlenecks” in BF tuyere design and operation.New designed measuring tuyeres enable to investigate the thermal conditions at the tip of the tuyere in operation.Based on the generated data of the measuring tuyere the heat transport process at the tuyere tip was simulated.An optical control system for early detection of tuyere damages was developed and tested. BF tuyere damages ofthe participating steel companies were analysed systematically. Correlations between BF operation conditions andfrequency of BF tuyere damages were investigated using statistical methods.
