摘要

Our society has become increasingly dependent upon electronic media and information technology. It seemsthat at times we have thoughtlessly embraced the promise and potential of the information revolution. Thispaper examines the unintended consequences of the information superhighway.Towards the end of the twentieth century, we witnessed many unconscionable crimes committed byteenagers, such as Littleton, Colorado amid reports that the Internet played a role in such tragedies. As aplethora of pornographic material, Neo-Nazi literature, bomb-making recipes and hate crime web sites invadethe Internet, many objectionable content providers enjoy monetary gains in this cyber business, while parentsand educators become increasingly concerned for the safety, privacy and protection of their children.This paper examines studies conducted to determine if pornography and other objectionable material viewedvia the Internet poses a social threat to individuals, in particularly children. It also analyzes the Constitutionalrights of free speech as it relates to the Internet and the issues of censorship. The issues under discussionare offensive material, free speech, censorship, children on-line protection, and the effectiveness of filteringdevices.The report concludes with recommendations of a common sense approach of combining filter devices, parentand teacher education, and resources to protect children on-line.
