摘要

The World Wide Web (the Web) is ubiquitous in people’srnlives today and is used on a daily basis to get informationrnon a variety of topics. While information seeking behaviorrnhas been studied extensively in a Web setting, many ofrnthese studies assume a task-oriented search for informationrneven though much of the information seeking on the Web isrnnot necessarily done with previously stated informationrnneeds or goals. Some Web information seeking activity isrndone for purposes of entertainment, or for simplyrnconnecting with other people (for example, via social mediarnwebsites), oftentimes with an unstructured, serendipitousrnapproach. Information seeking in general, and informationrnacquisition, in particular, is a pleasurable activity in and ofrnitself. Surfing the Web for pleasure is a prominent activityrnand worthy of our attention as researchers. To do so, wernneed an appropriate framework. This paper borrows ideasrnfrom a social-cognitive approach to the uses andrngratifications paradigm in order to investigate the suitabilityrnof that framework in a Web information access setting.rnMore specifically, we use the answers from questions wernasked to 180 survey respondents about their motivations forrnsurfing the Web for pleasure and their affective statesrnduring and after their surfing sessions. The findings indicaternthat the social-cognitive approach to uses and gratificationsrnis a useful baseline. We make enhancements to it andrnpropose our own framework for research in this area. Wernpresent data to bolster the notion that the seeking andrnacquisition of information brings pleasure and we propose arnframework to study user motivations and affective statesrnboth during and after their “surfing the Web for pleasure”rnsessions.
