This project quantified the effect of phase change materials (PCMs) in clothing on heat flow from the body during temperature transients. One and two layer body suits were constructed of a fabric-backed foam produced with and without PCMs. Heat loss from a thermal manikin was measured as he was moved from a warm chamber to a cold chamber and back again. The results indicated that the heating/cooling effects lasted approximately 15 minutes and changed body heat loss by an average 2-13 W, depending upon the suit worn. Sixteen male subjects wore ski ensembles made of the same materials during a 1 1/2 hour exercise/rest protocol which simulated skiing. Subjects' leg skin temperatures were significantly higher when wearing the PCM garments when they were seated in the cold chamber. However, none of the other skin temperatures were different during rest or exercise, and subjects were not able to perceive differences in comfort between the two ensembles.
