China is an economic miracle. It is now the United States' second largest trading partner. Although the U.S.A. is running a $100 billion trade deficit with China, U.S. exports to China have grown by more than 20% in 2003 alone. The large trade volume between the two countries has indicated that the "value" that China offers is two-fold: it is both a huge growing market and a low-cost manufacturing base. For U.S. manufacturers, this could translate into enormous top-line growth and great bottom-line performance. No market in the world is paralleled to the values China offers. Doing business in China is not easy. Cultural differences, human resources, intellectual property, corruption, Guanxi (relationships) and complex regulations, all pose tremendous challenges to U.S. companies. Large multinationals can afford huge upfront set-up costs and short-term loses. For medium and small firms, initial missteps could be fatal.
