摘要

Young adults struggle to be retained in institutions of higher education and encounter less support in their communities when they age out of youth programs. Few scholars have studied the Pilipino American young adult (PAYA) experience, particularly their experiences in institutions of higher education.; Using participatory research methodology, the researcher held one-on-one dialogues and two focus groups with seven participants, 2 female and 5 male young adults of Pilipino descent ages 18-24. The study explored PAYA's critical reflections on the factors which help retain them in higher education; supports they needed from the public, for-profit and not-for-profit sectors; and partnerships that communities and colleges could implement for PAYA's retention.; The participants identified relevancy and their life's passion in their education, financial stability, and safe and healthy home life and campus life as factors that positively contributed to their retention and academic success. Also, the PAYA participants cited some of the for-profit sector needed supports: internship opportunities, hiring and training policies for upper management positions, and media coverage on positive Pilipino role models and the Pilipino American community. For the not-for-profit sector, the needed PAYA supports that were identified included arts, music, culinary arts, and media based programs. In the public sector, the needed PAYA supports included: funding for Pilipino American young adults programs in the community, and funding small businesses opportunities. The PAYA participants also envisioned college and community partnerships that are centralized, community-driven, and inclusive of different sectors of the community.; Two general themes were identified by the researcher from the participants' critical reflections: the effects of the interlocking systems of power based on race, class, and gender in student retention and connection of PAYA; and the need for a Pilipino American run-university---the quest for Lapu Lapu University.
