The purpose of this study was to identify the leadership orientations frames of Veterans Affairs (VA) leaders who had completed the VA Leadership Development Institute (LDI) program and compare those orientations frames to VA employees who had not completed the LDI program. The study was designed to determine if there existed a significant difference in leadership orientations frames and perceived leadership or managerial effectiveness between LDI trained and non-LDI trained employees. The comparisons made during this study were conducted to answer the question; to what degree did the leadership orientations of LDI and non-LDI trained leaders differ. The study was conducted at the El Paso VA Healthcare Clinic. The Bolman and Deal Leadership Orientations theoretical framework and associated Instrument was used to examine the leadership orientations of both LDI and non-LDI trained VA employees. A quantitative comparative design was used. Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U revealed no statistical difference in the leadership orientations between the two groups. LDI graduates, however, perceive themselves to be more effective managers. Conclusions drawn from the statistical analysis and recommendations for future research is discussed.
