Advocating for civic spaces in Thailand: The Thailand Environment Institute experience.

摘要

Civic spaces are venues where diverse people can meet and exchange ideas without being overtly dominated by any one ideology or group. They are vital components of a livable city contributing to the socio-political context in which society interacts. A routinized approach to providing and sustaining civic space is especially necessary in places where civic space production is not fundamentally connected to the function of planning, as is the case in Thailand. The Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), a nongovernmental organization, actively facilitates the production of civic spaces within the wider goal of improving livability. Three case studies illustrate how the production of civic spaces is not simply about creating a physical space, but the institutional practices that support and sustain the space. TEI's efforts serve as the basis for a civic space production process whereby the components of space, communicative processes and institutional arrangements for sustainability can improve livability.
