Based on a parallel corpus annotated with paragraph redivision information,this study examines the factors that translators need to consider in redividing paragraphs in English-Chinese novel translation.The corpus is built from the novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,The Great Gatsby,The Old Man and the Sea,and their representative Chinese translations.Each case of paragraph redivision was identified,extracted,and classified,and the data analyses reveal two key findings.First,at the macro-discourse level paragraphs are frequently redivided to highlight key information,depict characters,enliven details,or provide an integrated description of setting.Second,at the micro-paragraph level,factors that come into play include completeness in meaning,relevance in content,and unity in topic.The findings suggest that all the seven factors compete and interact with each other,and operate to constitute a two-tier system.%本研究选取Alice's Adventures in Wonderland、The Great Gatsby、The Old Man and the Sea三部经典英文小说及其汉译本自建小型英汉小说平行语料库,对其中的段落拆并实例加以穷尽性标注、提取、归类和分析,探讨英汉小说翻译中段落拆并现象的成因.研究结果表明:在宏观层面,译者往往出于强调关键信息、增强人物刻画、活化故事细节、融合环境描写等目的对译文进行段落拆并处理;在微观层面,段落的语义完整性、内容紧密性和话题单一性也会影响译者的拆并选择.两个层面七个因素之间多元互动、相互竞争与协同,构成了影响段落拆并的多因素系统.
