Protease and Transglutaminase Application for Wool Anti-Felting Finishing

Transglutaminase, a protein crosslinking enzyme, combined with H_2O_2 pretreatment and protease, was used to modify wool fiber. Influences of various pretreatment agents, protease, and transglutaminase treatments on wool shrinkage resistance, fiber damage, and fabric strength were discussed. H_2O_2 pretreatment resulted in less damage to wool than chlorine-containing reagents. Protease treatment combined with H_2O_2 pretreatment could impart a significant reduction in fabric shrinkage and an increase in whiteness, but proteolytic action was not uniform and caused excessive damage to wool fiber. Use of transglutaminase, before or after chemical pre-treatment and protease anti-felting finishing, resulted in an increase in wool fabric strength and a decrease in alkali solubility. Wool shrinkage resistance could be improved and damage to the wool fiber could be controlled by using these combined treatments.
