It may appear obvious that anyone perusing the pages of AMLE will be interested in a new book on management and leadership development. After all, isn't that what we're here for? But the new text by Chris Mabey and Tim Finch-Lees does more than simply feed an extant interest in "all things management learning and education"; it provides a useful introduction to the field of management and leadership development while also offering a unique perspective on why the field exists and its contributions to organizational life. As the authors note, their intention is to explore management development "in all its intriguing facets" (4) and in so doing to present an engaging overview to those new to the field as well as an opportunity for new insights to those already steeped in it. Mabey and Finch-Lees offer multiple and unique answers to an essential question for academics and managers alike, "Why does management and leadership development persist?"
