Elon Musk says that his next Starship test bed is almost ready. The new hardware, called Starship Mk. 1, should be ready for flights within months. Another prototype, Starship Mk. 2, is also under construction at another SpaceX facility in Florida, and Musk is encouraging internal competition. Both these vehicles are a large step up from the Starhopper prototype, (which completed tests earlier this year), and will soar to up to 12 miles in altitude, as opposed to the 500-foot flights of the Starhopper. The full Starship, which is destined to take over all of SpaceX's spaceflight needs, is scheduled to begin operation in the early 2020s.
