摘要

As a still uncertain economy continues its stagnating effect, governments talk of stimulus packages and job-creation schemes. What you too rarely hear about, however, is a pledge for renewed investment in what is a top economic driver for any country-its airports. Airports employ large numbers of local people. Even more important, they bring in those critical engines of any thriving economy-trade and tourism. Given where the UK sits right now-the euro crisis still a potential menace-you would think that addressing the critical congestion at London Heathrow Airport would be a top national priority. Failure to do so could see LHR lose its status as a premier European hub. But even if the British government can accept London playing second fiddle to Amsterdam and Frankfurt, it should surely be concerned, as an island nation, with ensuring a viable aviation gateway into its capital city.
