During 1998/99 British Airways (BA) retired its 15 remaining Boeing 747-100s, Amongst that number was G-AWNA (line number 23/manufacturer's serial number 19761), the first of the type registered in the UK. There were hopes for preserving this 747, but it met its end―as a single entity―in 1999, when it was parted out at Bruntingthorpe in Leicestershire. However, that was not the end of the story but merely the beginning of a new chapter of service within the UK aviation industry, for at least part of the airframe survives in gainful employment with Interactive Recruitment & Training. The 23rd 747 was rolled out at Everett-Paine Field, Washington, on October 3, 1969, then sat engineless on the ramp for nearly five months because of delivery delays of Pratt & Whitney JT9Ds. (From the -200B series onward, all examples of the Boeing 747 operated by BA have been powered by Rolls-Royce RB211-524 engines.) Using the Boeing 'dealer plate' registration N1799B, it was first flown on March 15, 1970. Seven weeks afterward―on April 22―it was delivered to BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation―predecessor and constituent, with British European Airways/BEA, of BA) as G-AWNA, although the 747 did not leave for London-Heathrow until May 22.
