摘要

One of the united states' worst wartime aviation disasters occurred half a world away in 1943. Few Americans have even heard about it, much less remember and memorialize it. But some of our friends "down under" have not forgotten. The Australians—our stick-with-it allies for many years now—have time and again proved themselves in battle. They have also given irrefutable proof of their unwavering friendship to the American military men and women with whom they have served in numerous conflicts猻uch as World War Ⅱ, when Japanese expansion was threatening to engulf Australian territory. U.S. troops flew out of Australian bases to help stem the advancing tide of aggression. In addition to pulling their weight in the fight, "Aussies" accepted the American presence with open arms. They have also mourned U.S. losses as if they were their own.
