The FAA is here to help you, as the saying goes, to be air-travel safe any time, anywhere. The agency has embraced a two-pronged safety mission: improving an already excellent air safety record at home and expanding its international leadership role. To that end, the FAA is seeking $9.75 billion, or 71% of its total Fiscal 2006 budget request—$33 million more than 2005—to improve and maintain safety programs. The FAA is also seeking $33 million for "Global Connectivity" efforts. "The current commercial transport fatal accident rate of 0.017 in 100,000 departures is the safest it has ever been in the history of avi- ation," says Nicholas A. Sabatini, FAA associate administrator for aviation safety. "We've gone 3.5 years without a single Part 121 air carrier fatality"— impressive, considering the agency handles some 200 million flight operations daily. (An "accident" as defined by the NTSB occurs when a Part 121 aircraft is destroyed, or if multiple fatalities occur, or if there was one fatality and a Part 121 aircraft was substantially destroyed.).
