The closing of the merger between erstwhile rivals Intelsat and PanAmSat creates the biggest satellite operator in the industry's history and puts more pressure on smaller companies to join together or specialize to stay afloat in a marketplace still characterized by excess supply. On July 3, Bermuda-based Intelsat completed its $6.4-bil-lion purchase of PanAmSat, which included $3.2 billion in cash and the assumption of a similar amount of PanAmSat's debt. The deal nearly doubles Intelsat's fleet of 27 communications satellites and makes it the market leader in fixed satellite services. Announced in August 2005, the merger received final regulatory approval from the FCC last month.
