The state of the commercial aerospace and defense (A&D) industry is strong, transport aircraft orders are at record levels, and defense spending is on the upswing for the first time in years. But there's a hitch: Industry growth, especially in these times of low unemployment, exacerbates the workforce challenges A&D executives have been grappling with for several years. In our latest CEO survey, 75% of respondents said they are concerned with the availability of key skills.And in interviews with A&D industry leaders concerning workforce issues, they described the intensity of the "talent crunch" to attract as well as to retain top talent. They acknowledged they need to do more to address these issues and take advantage of the favorable environment. In particular, they cited changes to make the workplace culture more attractive to a wider audience, and better use of technology to train and engage workers. The need for talent will become even more critical in the next few years, as the baby-boom generation moves beyond traditional retirement age-and the unavoidable loss at some point of their expertise and knowledge.
