摘要

NASA's Mars helicopter completed the first point-to-point powered flight on another planet on May 7, marking another milestone for the program, which in just 18 days has transitioned from a proof-of-concept technology demonstration into an extended 30-day operational test-and-evaluation mission for future science rotorcraft. The $85 million program was originally expected to end by May 4 after up to five flight demonstrations. This was to enable the Perseverance rover-which since landing on Mars in February has served as the helicopter's communications link-to move on to its primary astrobiology mission. Instead, with the 4.0-lb. helicopter in excellent shape after the first three flights and with all objectives for the flight test program fulfilled, NASA on April 30 granted the Ingenuity team a 30-day extension to develop techniques and processes needed for future science programs. Later the same day, Ingenuity completed its fourth flight-climbing to an altitude of 16 ft. before heading south for about 436 ft. and returning. The 872-ft. roundtrip took 117 sec.
