The behaviour of Al, Cu, and Al–Cu alloys in various concentrations of NaOH and HCl has been investigated. All electrodes displayed increasing corrosion with increasing concentration of each of the two electrolytes. Copper additions in the range 1·8–12% were found to increase the corrosion rate of the alloys in HCl to a significant degree, but had relatively little effect in the case of NaOH. The mechanical properties of the alloys are improved by an increase in the Cu content, but this has an adverse effect on the rate of corrosion.
