I have argued that the word vernacular is well suited to distinguishing between modes of inquiry, or between specific ways of organizing information about architecture. A vernacular organization of information is one that is highly specific to a place, one that is not directed toward a particularly academic purpose. An example of a vernacular organization is the way in which photographs of grain elevators existed in obscure, locally circulating trade publications before Walter Gropius found and repurposed them for his 1911 address.
