AN this work the chemical composition of the essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation from the leaves and flowers of Acacia saligna were investigated by means of gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatog-raphy mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of thirty five and twenty nine components were identified from the leaf and flower oils, respectively. The major constituents of the leaf oil were mainly the hydrocarbons nonadecane, pentadecane, heptadecene and heptadecane together with mehtyl 14-mythl pentadecanoate, whereas the flower oil was characterized by high percentages of oxygenated compounds except for α-phellandrene which is a hydrocarbon. The major components of the flower oil were trans-coniferyl alcohol, γ-6 methyl ionone and 3-hexanol. Investigation of the hexane extract of aerial parts of A. saligna resulted in the isolation and identification of thirteen hydrocarbons, five fatty alcohols, the aldehyde octadecanal, as well as two pentacyclic tri-terpenes, namely methyl oleanonate and erythrodiol diacetate. α Spinas-terol, an anti-inflammatory sterol was also isolated from the hexane extract. The acute toxicity of the 70% alcoholic extract of the plant was determined which revealed that the extract is considered non toxic. The acute and chronic anti-inflammatory activities of the alcoholic extract were determined on rats. Results obtained showed that the extract exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activities.
