A 2006 COVER story in Time magazine proclaimed that 21st-century businesses expect employees to be able to work in groups (Wallis & Steptoe, 2006). Although a multitude of texts about group and teamwork exist, Group Communication Pitfalls is unique in its approach. It focuses on overcoming barriers to effective groups. If readers conscientiously apply the advice in this book, it will guide them to successful group experiences. Burtis and Turman note that many previous texts describe the predictable problems that occur in groups, but they point out that few texts structure themselves around recognizing and avoiding these pitfalls. Group Communication Pitfalls teaches readers to expect problems and to correct them before they derail or sabotage the group's work. Thus, practitioners who work in groups or who supervise groups, and consultants who train groups, will find this book useful.
