A world in which fewer people worked on our roads would see fewer deaths and injuries of highways workers. And if electricians on rail lines were able to spend less time on tracks, they would be in risky environments for much shorter periods. Based on these principles, dramatic improvements in safety are among the concepts being researched and developed into practical uses as part of an initiative that brings together industry groups, academics and the government. It has been operating almost entirely out of the spotlight - until now.
