Countries that trade with each other often use different systems to classify and label hazardous materials. These differences can lead to confusion and put workers' health at risk. To avoid such problems, the United Nations developed the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The purpose of the GHS is to encourage consistency when classifying and communicating information about hazardous materials.rnCanada has agreed to adopt the GHS. This means that, when implemented, the GHS will replace the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) across Ontario, including on construction sites.
