It is a great pleasure to bring you yet another edition of Cost Management. This edition will reach you as we change seasons in the northern hemisphere from spring to summer, or from fall to winter in the South. Such change functions in a familiar and mostly predictable way, and we are all used to the associated changes in weather and its implications for how we live. Change has been a common theme in my letters from the editor over the last five years, but generally I have talked about the implications of technology improvements and the way in which the accounting profession is being redesigned. In this edition, a number of articles address how a variety of factors affect people in the workplace; critical factors include the need to be much more alert to the fact that increased business volatility has created conditions that are impossible to predict specifically. Also, improvements in health care, food, housing, and many other aspects of our lives are causing us to live longer and therefore changing our needs for income, social inclusivity, and other things. At a recent workshop, three highly successful women spoke about changes in the workplace relating to gender equality and the way in which business practices are evolving.
