摘要

In this column, we listen to a dialogue between George and Bertrand, discussing the properties of distinctions. They discuss the possibility of a first distinction, and realize that the first distinction is not literally achieved by a thinking being, because the very act of reflection multiplies distinctions. Nevertheless, George proposes a theory of distinctions. In this theory two distinctions are equal if and only if they have the same contents. That is, their insides must be identical and their outsides must be identical. With the idea of the equality of distinctions, George and Bertrand find that the first distinction is unique. The first distinction is characterized by its lack of content! It is very attractive to imagine a first distinction. Such a distinction harks back to deep feelings that we all have for relations of part with whole. Yet, when we analyze the logical nature of such a distinction we find that it partakes of an idealization that never is achieved in practice. In practice our worlds are always more complex than the mathematical models that we make for them.
