In this essay, I summarize the key issues addressed in my doctoral thesis at the Planetary Collegium under Roy Ascott and David Turnbull's guidance. In it, I sketch a rationale for an cpistcmology of cultural work as linked to the practices of engagement that constitute both knowledge and space. Focusing on the engagements of the humanities and arts, I elaborate a second-order perspective for cultural work that challenges contemporary forms of political power and social control within the framework of the construction, production, and the distribution of knowledge. The aim is to provide practical support for practices of mediation, interpretation, representation, and education prompted by civic intention. Based on Heinz von Foerster's socio-epistemological second-order model of learning, my essay envisages a more anticipatory dynamism based on reflexive inquiries into the construction of longer-term impact, sustainable environment awareness, democratic debate, and improved qualities of individual and social interaction. Community psychiatrist Marcelo Pakman's organizing elements, which build on von Foerster's second-order cybernetics, provide additional support for practices and potential solutions from within alternative second-order frames in ethics, aesthetics, pragmatics, and politics. The proposed practice encourages self-inquiry at the most personal level and suggests new forms of dialogue between the humanities, the arts, and the public. Conventional notions of cultural work are revised and expanded to meet the new requirements of what I colloquially call cultural knowledge work (CKW).
