Why does the united states De- partment of State seem so pointedly determined to alienate one of its most important allies? Not a NATO partner, in this case, or Japan, or Australia. But its ma- jor energy supply partner in Africa, Nigeria. A number of political groups, as well as the -US State Department, have continued to press the Nigerian Government to extradite — without formal legal proceedings — former Liberian Pres. Charles Taylor from his house arrest in Calabar, Nigeria, to face trial at a United Nations criminal tribunal in Free- town, Sierra Leone, ostensibly on war crimes charges relating to the wars in Liberia and Si- erra Leone before and during Taylor's tenure as President.
