European defence industry is facing several political and economic challenges which are creating the need for solutions going beyond national level. The turbulences around the European Union's budget, the unpredictable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on national defence spending, fragmented and inefficient arms production, new, rising powers and intensifying global competition for markets are just some of them. Not to be under-estimated, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU could undermine the alliance's political, economic and industrial cohesion and capabilities.
