Spontaneousdwarfratsareausefulexperimentalmodelforstudyingvariousbiologiceventsassociatedwithpituitarydwarfism.DwarfratsoccurredserendipitouslyinourcolonyofWistarratsduringexperimentalbreeding.Thisstudyaimedtodescribethesleeppatternandphysiologiccharacteristicsoftheseratscomparedwithnormal-sizedadultrats.Becausegrowthhormonecanattenuatetheupregulationofceruloplasminexpressioncausedbyacuteinflammation,wealsoassessedthebasallevelsofserumceruloplasminintheseanimals.At90dofage,bodyweightandlengthweresignificantlylowerindwarfratsrelativetonormalrats.Dwarveshadlowerconcentrationsofserumtestosteroneandgrowthhormone,butprogesteronewasunchanged.Corticosteronelevelsdidnotdifferbetweengroups.Duringthelightperiod,thepercentageofsleeptimerecordedanddurationofslow-wavesleepdidnotdifferbetweengroups.However,comparedwithcontrols,dwarfratshadmarkedfragmentationofsleepandlessparadoxicalsleep.Duringthedarkphase,sleeppatternsindwarfratswerewithinthenormalrange.Immunoblottingdatashowedthatthelevelsofceruloplasmininserumwerelowerindwarfrats.Ourfindingsprovideinsightintopathologicprocessesrelatedtogrowthhormonedeficiency.
