Hamsterparvovirus(HaPV)wasisolated2decadesagofromhamsterswithclinicalsignssimilartothoseinducedinhamstersexperimentallyinfectedwithotherrodentparvoviruses.Genetically,HaPVismostcloselyrelatedtomouseparvovirus(MPV),whichinducessubclinicalinfectioninmice.AnovelMPVstrain,MPV3,wasdetectedrecentlyinnaturallyinfectedmice,andgenomicsequenceanalysisindicatesthatMPV3isalmostidenticaltoHaPV.ThegoalofthepresentstudieswastoexaminetheinfectivityofHaPVinmice.NeonatalandweanlingmiceofseveralmousestrainswereinoculatedwithHaPV.Tissues,excretions,andserawereharvestedat1,2,4,and8wkafterinoculationandevaluatedbyquantitativePCRandserologicassaysspecificforHaPV.QuantitativePCRdetectedviralDNAquantitiesthatgreatlyexceededthequantityofvirusininoculainmultipletissuesofinfectedmice.Seroconversiontobothnonstructuralandstructuralviralproteinswasdetectedinmostimmunocompetentmice2ormoreweeksafterinoculationwithHaPV.InneonatalSCIDmice,viraltranscriptsweredetectedinlymphoidtissuesbyRT-PCRandviralDNAwasdetectedinfecesbyquantitativePCRat8wkafterinoculation.Noclinicalsigns,gross,orhistologiclesionswereobserved.ThesefindingsaresimilartothoseobservedinmiceinfectedwithMPV.ThesedatasupportthehypothesisthatHaPVandMPV3arelikelyvariantsofthesameviralspecies,forwhichthemouseisthenaturalrodenthostwithrareinterspeciestransmissiontothehamster.
