InfectionswithavarietyofHelicobacterspecieshavebeendocumentedinrodentresearchfacilities,withvariableeffectsonrodenthealth.HelicobactertyphloniushasbeenreportedtocauseentericdiseaseinimmunodeficientandIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"-/-/supmice,whereasH.rodentiumhasonlybeenreportedtocausediseaseinimmunodeficientmicecoinfectedwithotherHelicobacterspecies.TheeffectofHelicobacterinfectionsonmurinereproductionhasnotbeenwellstudied.ThereproductiveperformanceofC57BL/6IL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"-/-/supfemalemiceintentionallyinfectedwithH.typhlonius,H.rodentium,orbothwascomparedwiththatofage-matcheduninfectedcontrolsorsimilarlyinfectedmicethatreceivedantihelicobactertherapy.ThepresenceofHelicobacterorganismsinstoolandrelevanttissueswasdetectedbyPCRassays.HelicobacterinfectionofIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"-/-/supfemalemicemarkedlydecreasedpregnancyratesandpupsurvival.ThenumberofpupssurvivingtoweaningwasgreatestinnoninfectedmiceanddecreasedforH.rodentiumH.typhloniusH.rodentiumandH.typhloniuscoinfectedmice.Helicobacterorganismsweredetectedbysemiquantitativereal-timePCRinthereproductiveorgansofasubsetofinfectedmice.Treatmentofinfectedmicewitha4-drugregimenconsistingofamoxicillin,clarithromycin,metronidazole,andomeprazoleincreasedpregnancyrates,andpupsurvivalanddamfecundityimproved.WeconcludethatinfectionwithH.typhlonius,H.rodentium,orbothdecreasedthereproductiveperformanceofIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"-/-/supmice.Inaddition,antihelicobactertherapyimprovedfecundityandenhancedpupsurvival.
