Onphysicalexamination,a5×10-cmabdominalmasswasfoundinaneight-year-oldfemalerhesusmacaque.Radiographyrevealedanopaquemassinthecranialportionoftheabdomen,displacingthestomachcraniad.Percutaneousbiopsyobtainedhairwithlittletissue,confirmingadiagnosisoftrichobezoar.Initially,thehairballwasmedicallymanagedbyoraladministrationoflubricants.Medicalmanagementprovedunsuccessful,themacaquebegantoloseweight,andtwogastrictrichobezoarsweresubsequentlyremovedsurgically.Normalappetiteandactivitywereregainedwithinoneweek.Gastrictrichobezoarsmayleadtosevereclinicalillness,andshouldbeconsideredinthedifferentialdiagnosisforanorexiaand/orweightlossinanynonhumanprimate.Trichobezoarsmayalsobedetectedandtreatedpriortodevelopmentofillness.
