Overthepastdecade,breakthroughtechnologiesintransgenicanimaltechnologyandfunctionalgenomicshaveplayedacentralroleintheexplosivegrowthofrodentmodelingandinscientificinnovation.Variousnoninvasivealternativestoroutinesurgicalbiopsyhavebeendescribedforgenotypicandphenotypicanalysesoflaboratoryanimals.Anumberofoptionsareavailabletorefineorreplacepotentiallypainfulandinvasiveproceduresrangingfromtissuebiopsies(includingtailbiopsiesandtoedocking)toseveralbloodsamplingtechniques.Unfortunately,adoptionofmanynon-orminimallyinvasivealternativeshasprovendifficultonanumberoffrontsrangingfromhistoricalreservationstoproceduralexpectationsandactualexperimentalproductivity.Similarly,avarietyofphenotypingconsiderationshaveaddressedthroughputefficienciesandthehealthandwellbeingofresearchanimals.Fromananimalwelfareperspective,markedincreasesinlaboratoryanimalpopulationshaveaccompaniedrapidadvancementsspanningthelifesciences.Asdescribedforrodentmodeling,butwithapplicationsacrossmanylaboratoryanimalspecies,diverseproceduralrefinementsareavailablethatwillreadilyaidintheanalysisofwholeanimalmodels.Ultimately,non-invasivetechnologiesandcomplementaryrefinementshavebearingonthequalityandreproducibilityofdatathatarereported,aswellasofcriticalimportancetothewellbeingandethicalmanagementofanimalsatalldevelopmentalstages:fromfetalexistence,totheneonatalperiod,andonthroughadulthood.
