To the Editor: Tularemia is azoonosis caused by Francisellatularensis. Recently, tularemia hasemerged in new locations, popula-tions, and settings (1). After an out-break in Spain in 1997 (2), it wasexpected that the disease wouldspread toward Portugal, a countrywith an extended area that borders theaffected areas.To evaluate the situation, a sur-veillance project, including a seroepi-demiologic study in human popula-tions and detection of the nucleic acidof F. tularensis in biologic samples,was initiated. The district ofBragan.a, in northern Portugal, wasselected as study area for its vicinitywith tularemia-endemic areas ofSpain and because Dermacentor retic-ulatus and Ixodes ricinus are welldocumented there (3).Biologic samples were collectedfrom 74 persons living in the studyregion whose activities represented anincreased risk for contact with ticksand wild mammals. Serum sampleswere available from 48 and were ana-lyzed with the microagglutination test(4). From the other 26 persons, bloodsamples were collected and frozen.Because of hemolization these sam-ples were only subjected to PCR.DNA was extracted by using theQIAamp blood kit (QIAGEN GmbH,Hilden, Germany).
