摘要

In the last decade, subjective career success (SCS) has emerged as a vital topic of discussion; hence, it grabbed the attention of researchers, educationists, and industrialists. SCS deals with an individual's personal feelings of satisfaction with his or her career path or outcomes and can be termed as real achievements that individuals accumulate through their work experience (Koubova and Buchko, 2013). SCS is largely affected by the emotional aspects of an employee, which most of the organizations tend to overlook. The emotional aspect is closely related to emotional intelligence (EI), which describes the ability to perceive, understand, and manage one's own feelings and emotions. The significance of SCS has become imperative amongst the employees working in the knowledge industry. The progress of knowledge industry (financial services, ITES, KPOs, engineering services, academia, and biotechnology industries) hinges not only on its physical resources but also lies on the effective utilization of knowledge assets. The figures and facts point in one direction, i.e., the job at hand with the perfect-handsome amount of salary, idyllic location, and fabulous growth opportunities. However, there is something missing and one feels perturbed about resigning from the existing position and moving on. The vital question is what will one do? One can simply sideline the feeling and opt what appears to be the logical path, or go with the gut feeling, or, consider both feelings and thoughts while making a decision. Unraveling the problems and making prudent decisions using both feelings/intuition and thoughts/logic is a part of EI. EI is the right word to describe the emotional aspects of an employee, which is defined as the ability to understand and control one's own emotion as well as that of others and effectively use the emotions for achieving the expected outcome (Citeman, 2010). EI is a crucial factor that makes a distinction between a superior and an average performer. Based on the skills connected with EI, it can be useful to achieve the objectives of an individual's subjective career through harmonization with the organizational objectives. This paper tries to extend the framework of Petrides (2009) by adding expressed behavior and providing some strategies for the promotion of EI in knowledge industry.
