Electric companies are energizing more than customers' homes and businesses. Employees of American Electric Power (AEP) subsidiaries Appalachian Power and Kentucky Power are getting kids excited about reading— and, they hope, inspiring them with stories that teach the value of persistence and discovery. Each November, AEP employees visit hundreds of elementary schools throughout their companies' service territories in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia with books in hand for Read to Me Day. After the AEP line mechanics, meter readers, customer service representatives, power plant workers, engineers, and other workers read to students, the books are donated to the schools' libraries.
