In the years since the emergence of Anglo-American cartography after the Second World War, rules for map design have gradually been systematised, and many books have been published in an attempt to teach people how to make better maps. With the widespread dissemination of geographic information systems (GIS) came a rapid increase in the number of published maps, and it is widely accepted that GIS tools have made it significantly easier for people to make them. However, they also make it significantly easier to produce badly designed maps, and many of these new mapmakers know nothing about what makes a map work. New approaches may be needed to guide novice mapmakers. Making Maps offers a visual way into this process, explaining design principles by visual exemplification. The first edition was published in 2005 to wide critical acclaim, supported by John Krygier's excellent and then very active Making Maps blog (http://makingmaps.net/). This fully revised second edition appeared in March 2011, but sadly the blog is much less active than after the appearance of the first edition. On his blog Krygier reports that: "Denis and I ruthlessly reorganized and rethought every bit of content in the book.
