摘要

The title of this book is not misleading: it is about map-making, it is highly visual and it is certainly organised as a practical guide, improving on the first edition. Though evidently useful for GIS practitioners, GIS is just one of the tools discussed by the authors, and not extensively. The organisation of the book allows for easy consultation of the different aspects involved in map-making. The very short introductory chapter launches the layout of what is to follow, with a word of caution on map ethics. Chapters 2 to 11 develop the Guide: map purpose and medium (Chapter 2), data issues (Chapter 3), tools (Chapter 4), framework (Chapter 5) and map design (Chapters 6 to 11). The book grows in complexity towards the end, with chapters on map design (Chapter 6), visual differences (Chapter 7), generalisation and classification (Chapter 8), symbolisation (Chapter 9), types (Chapter 10) and colour (Chapter 11).
