The United States will need to go beyond fuel efficiency standards and adopt more ambitious transportation policies to significantly cut the sector's greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on petroleum-based fuel, the National Research Council said in a June 23 report. Current U.S. transportation policies, including fuel economy standards, will only slow the growth in the sector's carbon dioxide emissions and petroleum use over the next several decades, according to the report, Policy Options for Reducing Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from U.S. Transportation.
