China's GDP has been experiencing strong growth over the last decades, which has depended on increased energy consumption, which in turn has led to increased CO2 emissions. China has received much criticism for its large emissions and inaction, especially when the global community negotiated reduction targets for the post-Kyoto period. Within China, however, climate change is regarded as both a challenge and an opportunity in conflicts of economic development and environmental protection. China has become increasingly positive and active in both international forums and domestic action on climate change.
