摘要

This supplementary issue on "Terror and human insecurity" consists of eleven papers, most of which originate intellectually from the collaborative research project "A New Agenda for European Security Economics (EUSECON)", funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union.1 The EUSECON research project analyses the economic causes, forms and effects of the human drivers of insecurity, who include terrorists, organized criminals, and maritime pirates. They have in common that they resort to the group-based, illegal use (or threat of use) of force to achieve their diverse aims, which range from the pursuit of extralegal profits to inculcation of fear and insecurity and publicity for political or ideological agendas. A natural extension and complement of such analyses is the study of the use of violence in group-based conflict, on which there is a large and growing literature in economics (Verwimp et al., 2009).
